Yes, I was born in the year of the Fire Dragon. I always reveled in that fact. I grew up believing that it was something special. My father, being born a dragon as well, was the head and I, the tail, or so the old folks in chinatown said. I also never questioned it. In fact, this belief in myself (which was supported by a lot of people around me), probably lead to my belief in life. A belief that is, admittedly a little lazy and a little indulgent and whole lot of entitlement.

Everything will fall into place and everything will turn out as they are suppose to be.

Imagine when I learned that this year, the year of the Water Dragon, that my luck will be 'bad'. How crazy is that I thought. It can't really be that bad. I mean bad luck to a dragon is like normal luck to other signs. We don't really have bad luck....do we?

23rd Jan 2012. First day of the Chinese New Year (technically). Woke up with a headache and a bad cough. Drove out and my tire got busted, twice in one week.

Ok. Now where is that luck charm that my mother gave to me.

On a side note, apparently I'm neither compatible with an ox or a goat. My last ex was an ox and my current is a Goat. Great.

Dear Twenty Eleven,

You were a rough one, I'll give you that. You weren't easy to be with, but we stuck it out didn't we? We gave it a good try.

I was hopeful when we started out. Optimistic that things would be great between us. Indeed somethings born between us were/ are indeed great and will be greater still, of this I have no doubt. What we had between us shines bright and for this I am very thankful and will forever remember you if only for this.

As I look back this past year though, I cannot deny that there was a lot pain and despair, maybe even hate between us. I am reminded of loss, tragedy and the trials that we went through. It was a lot to take. I am sure neither of us wanted anything bad to happened, but it did again and again. It was probably just your luck, a bad roll of the die, that everything came to a head when we were together. A roller coaster of emotions.

I thank you for being part of my life. I thank you for giving me the time to be with you. I thank you for all that I have learned. I thank you and goodbye.

Yes, goodbye because I think it's time for us to face the truth, our time together has come to an end. We knew this would come. It feels right doesn't it? It feels right that this goodbye is filled with the same hopefulness and optimism that we had when we started out. We have come full circle. Hopeful and optimistic for the future.

I was hanging out with a straight guy and a lady friend of mine the other day and while we were having coffee we stumbled upon the discussion of condom use. I was going on about how condom use is still pretty low with gay men even with the scare of getting a sexually transmitted infection. As I was going on my usual tirade, I notice that both of them had a perplexed looked on their faces.

"What?", I ask."Well I don't get it.", my lady friend said. "If a guy doesn't want to use a condom with me during sex, I just don't do it. I mean besides the fear of getting STIs, I also don't want to get pregnant." She continues on that getting pregnant right now is not an option for her. She has a career, she doesn't want to be a single mother, she also can't afford it. She also doesn't want the stigma attached with being an unmarried pregnant woman.

"I stand my ground. No condoms, no sex." She finally said.

I sat there silently realizing how getting an unwanted pregnancy can be very loosely compared to getting a sexually transmitted infection. The stigma, the costs, the lifetime commitment.

Finally my guy friend said something very simple. "If no condoms meant no pussy. I would use a condom." We all bursted out in laughter.

It seems the Green Lanterns had it right. Apparently willpower is the key to a lot of things, even success.

Recently, I had made a lot of changes with the establishments that I handle. Managerial changes. I tapped a group of people in particular. A group that I felt would have a good grasp of what a good customer experience should be like. A group that required one to have a silver tongue. A group that also required a quick wit, sharp senses, awareness of the surroundings and a dash of empathy. A group of freelance commercial sex workers.

It was a stroke of genius I thought. Those skill sets are hard to come by and these guys would have it in spades to be successful in their line of work. I forgot one small thing. Work ethics. It was a lesson I had already learned before. A lesson I foolishly forgot in my optimism and back-patting for what I thought was a match made in heaven.

So here is the question for me. If willpower can be exercised (as what the linked article above suggested), how do I help these guys increase their willpower? How do we help them exercise self-control? How do we help them learn to be a friend and mentor to themselves as the article suggets?

Last night, my partners-in-crime and I, decided to troop over to a bar to watch a bikini fashion show. We arrived at the bar fairly early and we were shown seats that was pretty near the stage. Perfect viewing angle I would say. It's been a while since I was able to join dalumat and londonboy for a night out of watching men in 'kinis, so I was looking forward to it. Of course, there were women in 'kinis too but who cares, right? Apparently, we would about 15 minutes later, when 4 burly men would come and sit right beside us.

I was enjoying looking at the backs of these burly men. They were huge really. Muscled. One had a sexy half sleeve tattoo. I kept wondering who were these guys. They had that air of being a 'someone', not because they were snotty or acted like we should know them, but it was more of their presence. They had a commanding presence.

Then it hit me. One of them is a basketball player for the PBA.

A couple of more songs and the show is about to start. Greetings were made on stage and more greetings of people around the room. So people started to look around for those that were greeted by the host. Wait. Are those side glances from the basketball player? Wait what? Nah. He probably was looking at the person behind us or something.

More side glances.... *ping* *ping* I think my gaydar is broken.

A smile and acknowledgement was made. More of the manly, hey-I'm-a-PBA-fan-and-I-love-the-game, kind of acknowledgement.

More side glances. What the hell.

"I think he is checking you out", dalumat whispered.

"Shut up. There is no way." I said.

Show starts.

"Uh, hey, you want to take my seat?" He shouts at dalumat who was seated beside me, "You know it would be easier for you to take pics here." My jaw dropped.

*ping* *ping* *ping* *PING* *BOOM*! My gaydar just exploded.

Small talk was being exchanged the whole night through. Then I noticed his hand was firmly on the thighs of the cute half-sleeved tattooed guy. I was going crazy.

The men and women half naked on stage were now strangely just images in front of me that weren't getting my attention. My mind couldn't process what was happening.

First set done and as we adjusted in our seats, I suddenly noticed that the basketball player's thigh was now placed squarely on top of the cute half-sleeved tattooed guy's thigh. I started to question my grip on reality.

More alcohol please. For me and for them. More for them.

Second set. Woohoo!

Our knees were already brushing each other at this point. Oh, and he had his arms around my chair too, sometimes around me. Yey for bromance, I thought. A funny joke about the contestants choice of clothes sent his hand squeezing my knee. I think I came a little.

I couldn't stand it and an unfamiliar feeling came over me. Anxiety. I didn't know what to do next. I froze up. I was out of my game. As dalumat put it, nataranta kami.

We went home that night not knowing what to make out of the whole situation. Until now I don't know what we should do next...

... but at least we got his number when we do figure it out.

A couple of years back, I had an interesting conversation with one of the pioneers of what is now a fairly big industry.

He was in his late 50's yet he still stood with a demeanor that was meant to make you think twice about butting heads with him. Chest all puffed up and head held high. He liked to talk big and there is always a tinge of threat in his words. His intentions are always vague. He obviously came from a time when life was harder than it is now. When you had to keep everyone second guessing to succeed. When cutthroat competition was more literal than figurative.

I poured him another glass of beer. Intently listening to his stories. Trying to decide which ones are true and which ones are embellished or made up.

"I was the one who started it all. You see, I was the only one around during the late 70s. Money was easy. I had market monopoly and I was intent on keeping it that way. Every time someone tried to open a similar establishment I would throw money at the police for them to close it down. I probably spent millions in the years that passed doing just that. A million then had more value than it i did now but who cared? I was the only one. I could easily earn that as long as I was the only one."

I studied his facial expression trying to see if I can glean any insight from it. Nothing. He would have been a good poker player.

"That time the police didn't know any better. Even city officials had no idea. I was the one who opened their eyes. I taught the tricks that we use in the trade and how to use it against them. They earned, I earned. Everyone was happy, but now...."

His gaze was far. He took another gulp of his beer.

"I was the reason that they raided each and every one of them. Me. Now they forget. Mga walang utang na loob. They would not have learned any of this if not for me."

He was in his late 50's and the connections that he invested in are now all retired. He was just harassed by the new generation of police officers. A new generation that feels more entitled. That what used to be given is now rightfully theirs to collect.

I went home that night realizing that sometimes, we have no one but ourselves to blame for our current situation. That rabid dogs, once set loose, will eventually bite the hand that feeds them. It will always come back. Karma.

It was also, to me, a dated story. A story that belonged in the past. That a story like this had no place in the present. That the present was more civil. That backstabbing and mudslinging was passe and fair out-in-the-open competition was welcome. More fool was I. I gave people too much credit. Some people just don't have any sense about them.

History is said to be important because without it, the past will repeat itself. Stuck fighting the same fights over and over again. Fights that we sometimes help create. Short-sightedness. Pettiness. Whatever the reason, it is just not acceptable anymore.

I got used to departures fairly early in my life. My first job at 21 was a stint at the Lion City. I am used to leaving people behind and I must say it is a strange feeling for me to be the one left behind.

This is a speech I gave last 15th of October at the first Quezon City MSM Summit held at the Basketball Court at the QC Memorial Circle.

Good evening,

I was asked to give a short speech today on behalf of our group, SaMACKA, an association of establishments which counts among its members a number of bars, spas, massage parlors that cater to the gay community. I would like to ask for your indulgence and would like to get to that later.

A while ago we saw a lot of statistics and numbers presented to us by Dr. Tayag of DOH and Dra. Inumerable of the QCHD, but what does that all really mean? It is probably hard for all of us to process all that information. Ano ba ang ibig sabihin lahat 'nun? What does it all mean? Please permit me to share with you something personal for the next few minutes.

In the past year, I have 5 friends who tested reactive. Yes. That means that they are HIV positive. 2 of them have moved on to their next journey. Nauna na sila. They have left most of us, their friends, asking why did this happen? How could this happen?

It is painfully heartwrenching. Shocking. Almost surreal. We could not answer all the questions that was going through our heads, yet we knew one thing. Something must change.

So you see, it is not only about business for me but very personal.

So I would like to make a personal appeal at this point. Please get yourself tested. Being HIV positive is not a death sentence.

Something must change. So ano ang ginagawa namin?

We have been working with the city health department along with other NGOs to make it easier to have safer sex. 100% condom use, that is the goal. We try our best to make sure that condoms are available in establishments where the most at risk population frequent. Awareness is key, so we provide IEC materials.

There have been stumbling blocks. This country is still highly conservative. There is still a big stigma attached to condoms and to the LGBT community. Some people would use this stigma against us but we cannot give in. We should not.

I own a bath house and being a owner of a bath house, you might find what I am about to say strange, even downright crazy. I hope that one day that bath houses are a thing of the past. That there would be no need for them. I am not sure if all of you are familiar what a bathhouse is, but suffice it for me to say that a bath house is a space for gay men to be themselves. What happens inside a bath house is incidental but what is more important is what it represents. A space that we can call their own. Indeed in today's society we are still pushed to our secret spaces because of stigma and intolerance. I look forward to a time when society accepts us for what we are openly. When there is no need for our secret spaces.

Until that day comes, you can count on us to try to push for easier access to condoms for safer sex practices. This is our fight.

Be proud, be smart but most of all be safe.

The first time I met Raymond was way back around 2004. I was a young engineer who worked in Singapore and they were there for a special screening of "Bridal Shower". Although I was lucky enough to join them for a late dinner after the movie, I remember little of him from that time except that he seemed like he had a million thoughts running through his mind and he had hair that grew up to his ears. My attention was, as you will all find understandable, focused on the young handsome actor named Alfred Vargas who so happened to be sitting in front of me throughout dinner. Little did I realize that Raymond would become a close friend of mine several years later when our paths would cross again.

I held these guys in high regard. They were both strong willed, well-adjusted, highly intelligent and successful. I saw them plow through challenges that life brought them with nary a wasted move or effort. There were only a few times that I have seen them buckle, and if they did, it was but for a moment before they focused back at the task at hand. So I found it strange and hard to understand that neither had taken the test. I have asked why several times and the words, the reasons, they gave me didn't make sense to me. At least not coming from them. They were intelligent, wise and driven, why would they avoid taking the test? It was illogical. They weren't the only ones.

It was fear.

Fear. So why would it make sense? Why would it be logical? Fear was neither of these. They were afraid of knowing because of what it would entail. Afraid of their pasts. Afraid of their present. Afraid for their future. Then something happened. People started getting sick. It wasn't whispers anymore. It wasn't hearsay anymore. It wasn't an acquaintance several times removed. It was friends. It was around us. They overcame their fear. Migs and CC finally took the test. Isn't it about time that you did too? Isn't it about time we took our lives back into our own hands and not let fear grip us like a vice? Isn't it time we love ourselves?

Overcoming Stigma Workshop

Red Hat invites you to participate in the workshop, OVERCOMING STIGMA, July 5-6 in Bacolod and July 8-9 in Manila. Stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS can be as deadly as the disease itself. The church, called to be a community of forgiveness and grace, must provide leadership in society to overcome stigma and to embrace those living with HIV/AIDS. This workshop will offer Biblical and theological resources to those willing to take up the challenge, as well as many practical suggestions for local action.

The workshop will be facilitated by Roy Berkenbosch, theological advisor for CRWRC and Director of the Micah Centre at The King’s University College in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he also teaches in the theology program. Roy and his family lived and worked in Bangladesh with CRWRC. Roy is on the board of Micah Challenge - Canada and has served as plenary speaker for numerous conferences, seminars and workshops on the theology of transformational development.

This is a timely event for the Philippines. The incidence of HIV in the Philippines is rising at an unprecedented rate. Although it is still considered a low incidence country, the UNAIDS Global Report identified the Philippines among only 7 countries in the world to record significant increase of HIV infections last decade.

DOH reports that the number of new infections continues to rise. Because stigma is a significant factor in the spread of HIV, combating stigma is essential to reversing the AIDS epidemic.

The good news is that the epidemic is reversible - which is also indicated UNAIDS Global Report. The devastation accompanying the epidemic (reduced livelihood/income, children dropping out of school, compromised health and decreased national life expectancy) can be avoided. Let’s respond to the challenges of HIV as Jesus would and be part of the solution to the escalating problems associated with HIV and AIDS in the Philippines.

From the moment I heard Boy Shiatsu's question, "Ano ba ang opinion niyo (fabcasters) sa mga sex workers like us?", I knew it was going to be a heated discussion between the fabcasters.

Migs' reaction wasn't a surprise to me, knowing his tendencies and background when it came to such a multi-leveled and morally polarizing question. What did come as a surprise to me was McVie's stand. I truly thought that he would have resonated more with Migs' thoughts on the matter since I knew McVie has reservations about personally paying for sex. Boy was I wrong on this one. We actually continued to discuss this topic well after the recording stopped. Making me realize something, some people have been socialized into thinking that sex work is a bad thing. That it is a profession that people turn to because either they needed the money and/or are just too lazy to look for a 'decent' job. Sure, there are those people, in fact the majority of people who are sex workers may fall into that category. There is also an assumption of choice or lack of thereof among other things. Whatever the reasons are, they all seem to have a negative spin to them and again this may hold true for most, but not for all.

The circumstances may have differed, but when I was young, there have been instances where a hookup would give me 'compensation' in one form or the other after having sex with them. I may not have thought of myself as being a sex worker back then and neither did I ask to be paid, be given any favors nor did I need the money or help, but that doesn't mitigate the fact that someone gave me something for having sex with them.

I remember the first time that I turned a trick. It was your typical anonymous hookups along the streets of Malate. I don't remember if I even asked for his name but we were soon on our way to the motel. I was young and free and he was good looking and confident. We had amazing sex or so I remember. As I got out of the shower I saw him place a couple of bills on top of my pants as he mouthed the words, "Thank you."

Did I refuse the money? I almost did, until I realized something in that split second. At a young age, I have been taught that people have different ways of showing their appreciation. We may not fully understand these gestures as we are not used them, but a show of appreciation must always be accepted graciously. This, to me, was at that point a token of appreciation for the pleasure that I had given him. Did it matter that he gave me pleasure as well? Absolutely. In turn I showed my appreciation with a hug and a kiss. Not as flashy but much more satisfying in my opinion.

Is my moral compass then "loose"? Maybe (I mean, I am the guy who flirted with a customer service officer just so I can get the same last seven (7) numbers for both of my telecoms provider). Is it bad though? Is it negative? In the bigger scheme of things, I think not. Pleasure and happiness are in such short supply these days that whoever trades in them gets a thumbs up.

With those two words, my friends and I, trooped over to a QC bar to watch the launching of an all new sing and dance sexy male group, Hotmen. Johnron was a special guest along with Dennis Torres. Of course I was excited to see the new group launch, but I bet I have seen *ahem* "more" of them during their stint at bikini-open-dom. But as my friend put it, Johnron is Johnron. I would agree.

Kenneth may not have had the most cut body among them but he did have the most presence and moved well on stage and quickly became my favorite (not to mention that he kept...'adjusting').

Their finale, where for a split second they were on stage wearing t-backs. I was right, I have seen "more" of them before and it wasn't just for a split second.

"Don't hire him. Really, he's a bad person."

I actually never heard my friend use that sentence before. He's a bad person. It doesn't leave much room for misinterpretation. There is no ambiguity about it.

"Just trust me on this. I won't bore you with the details. Just don't hire him. I know you like to give people second chances. In this case, he doesn't deserve it."

Of course, to me, that was a challenge I could not resist. So I hired him.

He used to be a manager in a credit card company. He started to earn and earn a respectable amount, but it wasn't enough. He wanted to rub elbows with the 'elite'. He learned how to use this amazing thing called credit. He sashayed his way to the high life, all on credit. He would buy his way to what he viewed as 'love and friendship'. When his cards weren't enough. He committed fraud. Made phantom accounts. He got caught and lost everything. Shamed he went into hiding in the provinces.

The first few weeks were fine. He managed the establishment well. Kept it clean and efficient though business was not doing well. I heard a few whispers here and there but they were minor.

Then more whispers.

One night though I was at a club dancing the night away when suddenly the sea of people parted and lo and behold my employee was there. I looked at the time. Wow, a full 3 hours short of our closing time. Interesting.

Then the whispers started to become louder.

How he would leave work early and go with friends to the casino/ clubs/ bars several times a week. Coming back early morning drunk, making a lot of noise and waking up most of the employees. He would put down other employees shouting expletives and insulting their status in life (not that he was better off). He started to ignore customers if they didn't meet his 'standard'.

"Mas-madam pa kaysa kay boss." An employee said comparing him to me.

The last straw finally came when he was overheard saying to a customer that we are closing our doors soon.

I should have listened to my friend. Some people don't deserve second chances.

Sex is good. Isn't it?

Like a lot of people, I've been sucked into watching the RH bill debate (if one can call it that really). Peeling away at all the trappings, words and 'civility', I realized that the debate is not really about population control, abortion or morals. The core of the debate, as I see it, is about sex.

Sex. The verb not the noun. Sex and how we view it personally. A very simple word that most past the age of 12 know the deed, if not in detail, at least in theory.

What I find hard to understand is that sex, in its own context, is viewed by some as a negative. As something bad and that we should abhor it. Well, abhor it unless, it is done for procreation. Procreation makes it beautiful and divine. I am hard pressed to find anything as dual natured as sex in this sense (except man himself).

Obviously I am not a conservative, and I like to promote a very sex positive outlook and lifestyle. That sex is good even if your intentions are purely recreational. That sex is also an expression of one's feelings. That producing a progeny isn't the only reason for having sex. That we should not fear sex. There it is. I think those who are against the reproductive health bill are really just afraid of sex. They fear it.

Fear controls you. Fear allows something to have power over you. It prevents you from seeing reason. It prevents you from making the right choices. Instead of them controlling sex, they are instead controlled by it.

The RH bill is about giving people a choice. It is about educating people. To me, it is also about being sex positive. It is accepting the fact that people want to have sex and that is ok. That sex is a good thing. That it is part of human nature and rather than pretending that it does not exist or it is unwanted, we accept it and learn to control it. To make the right and responsible decisions.

Spa owners say lingam massage ‘not indecent’

OPERATORS of a spa who claim to be the first one to offer authentic lingam massage in Cebu said the massage is not indecent.

Honey Yoo and Bella Bilocura, owners of Authentic Lingam Massage, said the exotic massage has the same purpose as other kinds of massage: to soothe and relax the client.

This massage technique involves stroking the male sexual organ. “lingam ” is a Sanskrit word for the male organ.

Yoo and Bilocura said they were hurt by negative feedback from other spa operators.

“We want them to understand that we are like them, businessmen who are running our businesses professionally and have abided by the law – securing business permits, health certificates and all other requirements required of us,” Yoo said.

Earlier Johnie Lim, president of the Spa and Wellness Association of Cebu (SWAC), said the association feared that the increase in the number of spas offering lingam massage would jeopardize the reputation of wholesome Cebu spas and violate high industry standards set by SWAC for spa operators.

ACCEPTED

But Yoo said lingam massage is a widely accepted form of wellness massage all over the world.

“It is accepted in strict Singapore and widely embraced in Muslim Malaysia, practiced in Egypt, Thailand, New York, California and London,” Yoo said.

Yoo, however, noted the sprouting of other spas who claim to offer lingam and said she doubted whether their therapists were properly trained.

Yoo said critics should get to know the massage first before condemning it.

Yoo said she and business partner Bilocura were planning to meet with Lim to explain what the massage was about.

“.. And so that he will have a well informed statement because I heard they (SWAC members) are meeting and planning to come up with an official statement soon. We don't want to be dragged by the bad publicity that some spa operators which are just copying our concepts have made for lingam ,” said Yoo.

INVESTMENT

She said she does not believe that lingam would give Cebu's spa industry a bad name.

“I don't think so, speaking for us though who are serious and professional about lingam as a massage. We have invested so much in the business. In fact eight of our twelve therapists are licensed and trained lingam therapists. I sent them to Malaysia just to learn the massage and with all that investment do you think we will just ruin our reputation and offer indecent service?” Yoo asked.

Yoo said that they have another spa in Makati, the “Coco Spa”, which offers lingam massage.

She said the people there said lingam is nothing new to them.

She urged Cebuanos to be open to new ideas.

THERAPISTS

“We are at the onset of globalization. How will we become globally competitive if we will immediately judge and mislead our customers?” she asked.

Authentic lingam massage is a whole body massage with two therapists to attend to each customer, he explained.

One therapist massages the upper part of the body and the other one massages the lower part, including the prostate pressure point.

“This is also to protect our therapists because some customers cannot refrain from touching them (therapist). There was even one time that we had a Korean customer here whom we have to ban because he really doesn't stop touching the therapist despite countless warnings from us.”

CAIB

Joseph Bullecer, president of the Cebu City Anti-Indecency Board (CAIB), said he inspected the six spas in Cebu City offering this service after he received complaints about lewd practices.

“I have already done inspections of some spas and they told me the lingam is just a 10-minute finale of the one-hour Shiatsu massage that they give to their clients,” he said.

Bullecer said he was not sure how massaging the male's prostate area could benefit the customer’s health.

“As a doctor I still have to research more about this and see proof that the massage could really benefit the health and wellness of a person,” he said.

I wonder if the doctor reads medical journals... it has been said several times before that prostate stimulation (like masturbation) has been proven to lower the chances of getting prostate cancer.

Rich and hails from a very influential family, he looks like he is in his mid-30's but is actually in his 40's. Mestizo and has a very friendly personality, he has an air of wealth and confidence about him but never flashy or overbearing. We bump into each other every now and then at the gym where a troop of hunky trainers buzz around him. He only hired one. One in particular, the cutest one, has been pestering him for a dinner date. He hates it.

Several times before he was setup on a blind date. One of the blind dates went well so they started to go out on a regular basis. When the one who set them up found out, he got pissed at the guy he setup my friend with. Why? Because he (the guy who introduced them) should always be asked to tag along on their dates. Anyone who knows me, knows that I like frequenting pageants. Male beauty pageants specifically (or to be politically correct, "male personality contests").

I missed much this year. For some reason they are not as highly publicized as they used to be. For those who are in the same boat as me, not to worry, it is not too late! It is only now that we are feeling the summer heat and these shows will add a little more sizzle.

In fact there are three major pageants that will be held this month... between 5 days! 3 in 5 days. Yeah.

I felt anxious. I double checked my things and everything was in order. I went to the mirror to check how I looked. I didn't look as great as I used to look when I was at the peak of my vanity, but presentable at least. I still felt anxious. Like I was not comfortable in my own skin. I took in a deep breath and reprimanded myself silently. "Buck up!" I told myself as I walked down the corridor. I just disembarked, welcome back to Singapore.

It felt strange. It has been four years since I last went to Singapore. I immediately noticed the differences. I used to know him so well having stayed here for a good seven years but the differences are glaring. I felt even more anxious. Like I was looking at a stranger. I didn't know him anymore. He was all jazzed up.

what happens after...

Two weeks ago, a major news network, with the help of the police, did an 'expose' on a massage parlor. It was aired a week ago. This is about what happens behind the scenes and after the raid....

A little before midnight, two masseurs from the establishment were caught on tape giving extra services to two gay assets. The tips given them were marked money.Two. Sixteen were taken into custody. None of them were given a reason why they were being arrested.

We would later find out that the other 14 would be charged with working without a proper working permit. Yes, because working without a proper working permit is such a big crime, they had to be incarcerated. 8 of the 14 actually had current and valid working permits. Their permits were taken and hidden during their inquest.

For the next several nights, all 16 would be crammed into a jail cell that could not have been bigger than 10 feet by 10 feet. No food would be provided to them except for those that were brought by their friends, associates and family. They were so hungry that they would finish the food that was brought to them within a few minutes. It was inhumane. They would only be released if they posted "bail". "Bail" money that most of them did not have. They had to stay incarcerated and endure this for 5 days. Why? Because, at least for 14 of them, they allegedly worked without a proper and valid working permit. Talk about the punishment fitting the crime.

The other two were released after a week inside the cell with an even bigger bail.

This is not something new. Networks have used the police before to get a scoop and leave the police to their own devices after. A sort of symbiotic relationship. The network will get their rating and the authorities make a living. Everyone is happy. Everyone except the guys who just had their rights abused and have now become all the more impoverish because of it. Now that is the real crime.

If this were a true operation, a search warrant and mission order should have been presented. None was shown.

The 8 people who had their work permits and were not caught doing anything questionable should have not been arrested. The other 6 who did not have the permits should have been only fined for this very slight oversight.

Only the two guys who allegedly accepted money for sexual favors should have been brought to the precinct as a witness and not as criminals. These guys should not have been incarcerated but instead should have been brought to the proper agencies to be rescued, processed and given help.

eagerness and deadlines

At least once a month I would meet up with the doctors of the city health office where my establishments are located. It is with great pride that I can claim that I have a close working relationship with them. Our discussions can range from formal to casual to argumentative sometimes even heated and emotional, but at the end of the day we all agree that more needs to be done. HIV is here.

Prevention is key but often times care and support are forgotten. No, not forgotten, rather put aside. No one can blame them really, for how can one department handle all this. Plans are important. Inter-agency cooperation, vital. So when both of these are non-existent I can't help but question if they are just overly eager or is that accomplishment report deadline drawing ever nearer.

More and more these days, as one drives around the metro, one will inevitably see a poster or a billboard of a half naked man in all their sexy glory. Traffic hazard they maybe, but a welcome sight really. This afternoon as I was driving past GMA network along Timog Avenue in Quezon City several posters caught my eye. What was different about this was that it wasn't the men that made me make double take on it, but rather the words. The title of the show really.

Then the images began to register.... Dingdong Dantes with a feather boa. Marc Abaya shirtless with a feather boa. Antonio Aquitana looking yummy with a... you guessed it... feather boa!

I had a big smile on my face. Oh wait, what? GTFO! who is that in drag? No effing way! Paolo Ballesteros in drag! OMFG! Tirso Cruz III too!

This has to be great right? Right? I go online and read up on the background story.... and well.... yeah. Still, for that few minutes, I pinched myself twice to check if I was dreaming.

Every month I get at least about 4 calls from personal friends asking me if I know of any guys that they can hire for some sexy exotic dancing (a rhetorical question of course). A few would be defensive about their inquiry and make sure I understand that it isn't for them....

A bridal shower, a party, a friend is curious... whatever the reasons are, ultimately to me it doesn't really matter. You need a male stripper. I get that. To me it's just really another form of entertainment, much like when you are in the mood to see a movie you go to the cinemas. Done. It's as simple as that.

So I find it funny to see some of the reactions of people when I don't ask the why of it, but instead ask "which one (would you prefer)?". There is a visible pause, almost surprise as they realize something... a smile and then finally the question, "You mean I can choose!?!"

It is always heartwarming for me whenever I hear that my recommendations were spot on. That the stripper was great and that they all had a good time. It also saddens me.

It saddens me that because of our laws we have to keep this kind of entertainment underground. Only accessible to people who are lucky enough to have the right connections. Even luckier if they get to choose a person they actually like.

It also frustrates me to no end of the very very visible double standards regarding such entertainment. For what is chippendales, cosmo bachelor bash etc. but a bigger and upscale parade of the flesh. Take away all the glossy trappings and it is just that. Adult entertainment. A celebration of the male body in its finest.

I dream of the day when I can actually see a local company put up an ad similar to this in the local papers advertising their services for some adult entertainment...

What is it with men who play sports that gets a gay man going... and going... and going. There is something undeniable about how sexy sportsmen are. They are really modern day gladiators.

The past days, baller, Paolo Hubalde (the younger brother of Derrick Hubalde) has been the guest judge at "Showtime". He may not be the most vocal, good looking or energetic of the guest judges that the show has featured so far, but there is an unmistakable charm and sexiness about him. Of course, a lot of props to Vice Ganda for being able to bring that out of him.

policing the police

The police didn't waste anytime. Just four days in to the new year and the papers have been a buzz with stories of police abusing their position and power.

There is the Pasig police officer who was caught on camera making a scene and wielding a firearm (I wonder why they keep highlighting that he wasn't in uniform. As if being in uniform would have made his conduct more acceptable).

There is the Manila police officer who arrested a woman, while waiting for his boyfriend, under charges of vagrancy and subsequently raped and robbed her in the police precinct.

Another cop from the MPD stabbed a guy in the head who was apparently too noisy while celebrating the new year.

and a few others.... the good news? Interior Secretary Jessie Robredo has taken notice. This gives me hope for the new year. That the police will be policed. That we can, as citizens, look at the police and not feel fear or anger. That we can trust them again to be on our side.

I really hope that Mr. Robredo really will take a hardline stance in this regard and that it's not just because of the sudden attention that these stories have garnered. Why? Because last year, weeks after the police's ego were bruised by the hostage taking fiasco and the video that showed police torture and brutality, we noticed a steep rise in reported police operations that had questionable motives to say the least. Much like a bully going around and pushing people after being shamed and called out.

Fabcast: loneliness (part 1 and 2)

I never did get why people would feel particularly sad and lonely during the holidays. Now, I don't mean that I have never felt lonely. In fact, I often feel that way in a crowded room full of strangers. What I don't understand is why does the holidays seem to have a way of magnifying that feeling. How it can really hit some people really really hard to the point of tears. Being separated from your loved ones, the longing, the loneliness, the separation and the lack of support.... I get that. This is especially true when I was still working overseas. I believe that situation speaks for itself. However, what I don't fully get are those that are not separated from family and friends (attached or unattached is immaterial in my view). Let me clarify that. I get the loneliness, what I don't get is their willingness to stay in that state. Too wallow in it. Honor that feeling, sure, but don't let it overwhelm you. Emo was so last decade and being self-absorbed has never been sexy.

I arrived late for this particular podcast recording... Listening back, I really wish I hadn't. It sure sounded like a lot of fun for a podcast about loneliness. :P

Lately there has been a lot of buzz regarding an excerpt from a book "Light of the World: The Pope, The Church and The Signs Of The Times", regarding the current Pope's stance on condom use. An obvious shift in the teachings of the Vatican.

The Catholic Bishop's Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has gone on the defensive. Dr. Haas, of the National Catholic Bioethics Center, went as far to say that the pope is wrong if he is in fact opening this for debate (which brings forth the question of papal infallibility, which some might say put us here in the first place).

This news is especially interesting for me for several reasons ...

... because not only does the church use condoms as a sign of wrong doing and immorality you see, but authorities and local media also use this from time to time.

... because providing condoms is often associated with immorality and is therefore (should be) illegal (no separation of state and church).

... because very recently I just found out that another friend of mine is HIV+.

In the end, does this really change how I see condoms? No. I do hope however that a lot more people will start seeing it like I do. How I hate the disease more than I hate the sin.

Massage po sir?

Looking back, I find it funny how naive and optimistic I was. Blame it on living a more or less sheltered and favored life but I truly believed that most people, if shown kindness would also show kindness in return. That the difference between a successful and unsuccessful person was just really a matter of getting the right break. That a nurturing environment would make people conform to a culture of giving and giving back. Was I in for a wake up call.

Ego and Objectification

In their line of work, masseurs are often objectified. That is the reality. Along with the intimate nature of their work and the societal taboos surrounding it, most have no pride in the work they do. That the massage itself is unimportant. That they can provide mediocre service and it would not matter in the end. All that is important is how they look to the client and how they measure up to the rest of the staff.

Such an environment inevitably hits a man where it hurts. His ego. Day in and day out, their egos are laid bare for everyone to see especially among their peers. This inevitably leads to a 'caste' system among them, the popular ones being the top dog and vice-versa. Their male potency regularly questioned. This just feeds more to the cycle and that cycle is really hard to break. Sexuality too is often questioned and reasserted.

Motivation

The number one reason why masseurs are in this line of work is because they are hard up. This is by no means a surprise. Asked what their main concern in life is, it would be about making ends meet. This problem makes them short sighted, indeed how does one plan for the future when you don't have food on the table, or your electricity has been cut. For most masseurs, it's about maximizing your earnings right now. There are two components in that sentence. First the 'maximizing your earnings' part in the easiest way possible. Second, the 'right now' part which means they can stand to be a little more concerned about making sure a client becomes a regular of his, rather than one-time-big-time kind of deal. Insert sob stories here.

*The masseurs are often surprised that I am often proven correct when I tell them that they have a better chance of a higher tip if they don't tell their sob stories or stop themselves from suggesting a huge tip and just give a great massage.

Work Ethics (or the lack thereof)

To earn a living, most people have to work at least 8 hours a day. The masseurs? Yes, they do have to stay at the workplace for 8 hours but the actual work? Two hours tops. Most of the time is spent lounging, watching TV or chatting with their co-workers in an airconditioned room. Easy. In fact, most of them tell me they prefer to go to work rather than stay at home where its hot, humid, noisy and no cable TV. Compare that to what they will earn working as an unskilled and uneducated blue collar worker. The choice is really a no-brainer if you have the *ahem* loins for it.

As you can imagine, a masseur can handle a very wide range of clients, but most would at least have a fair amount of disposable income. Varying degrees yes, but still have some disposable income. Here they are, trying to make ends meet and most of the clients they handle seem to be carefree. Of course this isn't true as they don't see the hard work that their clients put in to reach their success, but it does spoil their view of life doesn't it? That money does grow on trees for some people and that life should be easy. That hard work is overrated.

The job as a masseur actually spoils most of the guys for any other work. I have had several masseurs who tried to be a service crew at a fast food joint or a salesman at a department store only for them to come back after a month. There is even one in particular who was able to put himself through college, finish a management degree, get a job at a multi-national company and still considered coming back to work for me.

Getting unstuck (Changing Mindsets)

Most of these guys seem to be, for a lack of a better word, 'stuck'. Stuck in the daily problems of their lives. Stuck in the same cycles. Stuck in the same lifestyle. Just stuck. They seem to be impatient and wanting to accomplish a lot of things but don't have the patience to just work at it. They seem fearless yet at the same time they are afraid to shake things up. Most of them just really need to get unstuck.

Of course this is a sweeping generalization and perhaps a shallow assessment of how most masseurs are. There are always exceptions to the rule, like the one that went on to finish college or the one that put up a small enterprise or the one that drives a cab around the city. These are the exceptions. Truly when a particular masseur becomes the exception it warms my heart. I jokingly tell my friends whenever they would look for a particular masseur who has moved on to other things and be the exception, that they have "graduated the Hilom finishing school". Really not a big stretch as part of the responsibility of an establishment is to teach the masseurs to better present themselves and handle clients. To successfully do those things they do have to overcome most, if not all, the factors that I stated above.

Food for the Soul

Like most Filipino families, every year our family takes a trip to the cemetery where we visit our dearly departed. With parking being a common problem, my brothers, sister, mother and I, are forced to take just one van going to the cemetery. The only time of the year where we are really forced to do so.

As expected, traffic was bad and so by the time we reached the family mausoleum, we were pretty much caught up with each other's lives.

As my mother unpacked our stuff, we each went about our own thing. I cleaned the place a bit, my bro setup the candles and my sister went to check the faucets and my other bro started to check the perimeter for any damages. It was going to be a busy day for us and we all knew the things that needed to be done.

After the initial setup, I decided to walk around the cemetery (*ahem* I swear the cute shirtless guys had nothing to do with my decision whatsoever *ahem*). There seems to have been new mausoleums built. My gaze shifts to one in particular. There seems to be some cheering going on and people had some big smiles on their faces as they started to gather around one of the tables. I catch a glimpse of what the commotion was about. A full sized lechon baboy (roasted pig).

I return just in time to see one of my aunts arrive with her family. She flashes a big smile and after the initial hi's and hello's, she corners me and brings out a program. My cousin's wedding. Well, not the actual wedding or reception anyway, but just a family event so we can get to know the in-laws. One which I'm suppose to host along with another cousin. Deep into the debate on the merits of a white and off-white against a white-gold-red motif, my other aunt arrives with her family . Lunch time!

Over lunch, coffee and dessert, the aunts came to the conclusion that white and off-white tables with red rose bouquet centerpieces was the way to go. Add in white and red balloons with candles on lily pads floating on the pool for good measure. Victorian chairs goes without saying, of course. My aunts were nodding and editing their program furiously. All the while, me and my cousins were the doing an eye roll and sharing a laugh.

It was already the afternoon and we needed to pack up. We closed the day with a prayer to our loved ones who had moved on. We say our goodbyes, but we don't go home empty handed. Each family had something packed for the other family to take home for dinner.

Eat, pray, love.

All souls day is really for the living and renewing our connections with our family and relatives. In this way, we actually do honor our dead.

Youth AIDS Filipinas Alliance, Inc. (YAFA), member organization of YPEER-Pilipinas and a partner youth-led non-government organization of the Manila Social Hygiene Clinic of the Manila Health Department condemns the arrest of its community outreach worker by the Manila Police.

A group of outreach workers of YAFA, under a Global Fund-supported project, has been conducting educational services and distributing condoms to vulnerable groups such as men who have sex with men and sex workers in the red light district of Manila, particularly in Malate for the past weeks. The incident happened when one of YAFA’s outreach workers who was assigned to cater sex workers, was arrested while conducting HIV 101 along Nakpil Street at around 12:35 a.m. of October 17. The outreach worker was brought to Station 5 of the Manila Police Department citing the possession of condoms as an evidence of prostitution. Also, there were other individuals who were arrested, including young people and children.

While the situation was handled well by our outreach worker and the outreach worker was released from prison, the arrest has caused the disruption of YAFA’s provision of services to vulnerable groups, a loss opportunity for us to successfully educate our target clients about HIV & AIDS and sexually transmitted infections.

This arrest and the use of condoms as evidence to criminalize vulnerable groups is an act of terrorism. We are calling for the removal of such policies, which hinder the provision of public health services to people who are most at risk for HIV. If we are really serious in our commitment to combat HIV & AIDS, we should create an enabling environment for our people, including vulnerable groups. Using condoms as evidence to incarcerate vulnerable groups and the use of force is a violation of human rights. This act will drive our vulnerable groups underground and will force them not to bring/use condoms, a situation that is detrimental to our efforts to prevent the spread of HIV.

We at YAFA believe that there is a need for leaders, health workers, activists and other key players in HIV & AIDS, particularly in Manila, to look at this incident to avoid similar situation in the future.

We are calling the Philippine National AIDS Council and other stakeholders, including the City Government of Manila, to act towards the harmonization of existing policies that will help in the efforts of HIV prevention.

Why do massage parlors, that cater to the needs of gay men, most often than not, are located in shop houses whose conditions are left with... to put it nicely.... a lot to be desired for? This is a question that I often get asked. A question I myself asked several times before I setup Hilom. A question that I answered then, probably naively, that there is no real reason except that the people behind these massage parlors probably never thought (wished) of offering something better. So I decided to do something about it and enter the industry.

A few years later and a little wiser that reason is still valid but there are also other obvious and not so obvious reasons driving this trend.

1. Most massage parlors are owned by former masseurs (supported by a gay benefactor in most cases). These masseurs follow the business model that they know and so therefore most of the places seem to be cut from the same cloth in terms of operation, management, looks and even location.

2. Seeing that most owners are not gay themselves but have lived their lives earning from services rendered to gay men, a massage parlor is an extension of this thought. Basically, its all about maximizing one's earnings against quality of service offered. Since gay men still flock and go to places even if the level of sanitation is questionable, why would one spend money on improving the place?

3. Some owners believe that men having sex with other men is illegal. Yes. You read it right. Hard to believe I know, but it is true. Hence the reason why some of these places are really hard to find and are hole-in-the-wall places.

4. The fancier your place is, the higher rate you are charged for *ahem* "helping" the authorities out.

5. Maintenance is a biatch and most of the staff really either don't care or don't know how to take care of the place. Most of them being not formally educated, they are the one's who would stick chewing gum under the table or throw candy wrappers indiscriminately even if the garbage can is just 5 feet away.

6. Given the cost of operations and sometimes the harassment one faces, it is very possible that one would close shop after a year of operations. So why even try to make the place look nice when you could be closed tomorrow?

So there you have it. My top reasons why a massage parlor in the Philippines can't rise to the levels of the ones in Bangkok. That's just for the establishment itself of course... I haven't even begun why a masseur here in the Philippines would have a hard time reaching the service provided elsewhere around asia. That is definitely another post.

"What!?! Wow. Not being mean or that I have anything against him but let's face it, he is not a boytoy by any stretch of the imagination. He doesn't have the looks to pull it off but damn. Really? Wow." My friends were too polite to voice out their agreement, but just laughed and gave a weak nod. I can't believe he was able to afford and get the services of an A-list porn star. Not only that but he is now looking to hook up with some local celebs the next time he is here in Manila.

A few years back I was introduced to this guy who is based overseas. He was a little on the pudgy side, wasn't traditionally cute or handsome but was very friendly, spoke well and seemed to live for the moment. He struck me as a simple and uncomplicated guy. He hasn't been back to Manila for quite sometime and his nights were all about exploring the gay scene. Especially the massage parlors and gay bars (from what I can tell). He seemed famished for sex.

"Wow, he seems like he has a lot of money to burn." I told my friend.

"Here's the thing. He's unemployed." my friend said.

"Really? Wow. Rich family huh."

"Nah, he has a rich benefactor. Brings him around the world, gives him a hefty allowance and all that."

"Him? No way. Really? He doesn't really strike me as the person who has the.... ummm... looks for it." I answered back.

"Uh huh. Amazing huh. He lives the life of a prince."

"Damn." As I take another sip of my beer, "Where can I get some of that?"

We all laughed.

"Well, we can't really live that kind of life. We are not built like that. Too driven." A friend chimed in.

"I guess. I have another friend who tried, he thought it was what he wanted. An easy life. He was given a condo, a car. In the end though he couldn't hack it. He couldn't have sex with his benefactor."

"Yep."

A silent pause. A sip of the beer.

"Don't you wish though that sometimes you can be just that simple?"

on finding our own space

A gym, a bar, a disco, a club, a bath house, a massage parlor, a gay bar. Peel away the differences between these places and at the core it is really about finding our own space. A space where we can be ourselves, where we can let our hair down, where we can take off our masks (or wear a different one, whatever makes you happy). Where we can be gay.

Yes, these are businesses, but the idea these places represent is bigger than that. These are the spaces we have carved for ourselves. Where we have been forced to gather together be it from societal pressure of the majority or the self-righteousness of the minority.

We are already persecuted at the public spaces, will we still let them encroach on our private spaces? Do we still let them deny the small spaces that we have already carved for ourselves? Do we let them push us back into our cramped little closets?

Why do they fear us so? Why do they protest too much? Do they hate for being so free and accepting? Do they hate us for living the life they can't..... even if it is in our small spaces?

the Incident (at Q)

Shock. Anger. Frustration. Disbelief.

I got the call from my manager a little past 1 am that Q has been raided by the police. He paid for that call with a hit at the back of his head.

I tried to negotiate for an early release through different channels. I called in favors from a lot of people to get their help in amending the situation. I literally drove around the city and knocked on several doors that night, waking up people of note to help. It was fortunate that a TLF share collective as well as an AKBAYAN representative was also on hand to help us out to try to discuss the terms of release. Finally hope came when someone did provide significant help. The call was made. The agreement was none of the clients to be harmed or coerced to give any amount. Sadly this was not the case. The authorities just said the clients gave it to them of their own free will, out of the "consideration of their heart".

We were called "immoral" for having sex with other men. We were questioned why do we allow such "immoral" acts to take place in our premises. That men having sex with other men was immoral and therefore illegal. That it is not possible for men to have sex with other men if there is no exchange of money. That we were promoting human trafficking this way.

Loving other men is not illegal, robbery and extortion is "good" sir.

They trampled on our rights and beat us to the ground. We maybe black and blue, but we promise we will not take this lying down. We are now preparing to take action. It was a very horrible and unfortunate incident but it now a part of our (LGBT) arsenal to fight for our rights more than ever.

We are sorry to all those who got hurt and traumatized by this incident. We are deeply saddened that you all had to go through such an ordeal. We are sorry. I know that this apology might sound hollow and of little meaning, but we are really deeply sorry.

I started early. I had my first boyfriend when I was 16. We lasted 3 years. From that time onwards I have never been single for more than a year, my first year in a new country. Even with the adjustment though I wasn't exactly hibernating. I dated and even riskily hit on a cute officemate (dude, he looked like Aaron Kwok, I think it was justifiable). Recently, me and my boyfriend broke up, and as bad as this may sound, I was already out on a date after a couple of days of moping.

Recently, I ask myself, is my serial dating habits really a form of self-validation? That the status of being single is something that needs to be rectified immediately? That after all my pronouncements at how hard I have to work on trying to make time for myself that I am, in the end, incapable of being alone?

My buddy. With his need to be the 'good guy' and please everyone is sometimes too caught up in what other people's opinion of what he is doing. So much so that he can't enjoy his moment of happiness.

The guy who looks good but is so hungry for attention and praise regarding said looks just ends up looking bad and insecure.

Myself, a person who practically has never truly really been single since 16, jumping form one relationship to the other. Is that also a form of self-validation?

Stories about validation. About how people need to be reassured every now and then and how different that need can all be. How sometimes this hunger for acceptance by others by whatever arbitrary standards we set for ourselves could be detrimental to our personal happiness. That being too concerned with what others think, stifle us. We sometimes place too much value on how other people view us and base our sense of self-worth on it. When all we really need to do is just relax. Relax and just really enjoy the moment and forget whatever other people might think. It's your happiness on the line not theirs.

"I just need to ask, where are the handsome, decent guys like me these days?"

Uh oh, I thought to myself.

A friend of mine decided to bring an acquaintance to our weekend cap off. A 'let your hair loose, wear whatever is comfortable and just enjoy the last hours of the weekend with some heartwarming coffee and conversation' kind of deal.

"Guwapo naman ako," he went on, "Diba?"

He did look good.

"All things even, ako yung pinaka-guwapo dito, diba?"

Woah. Hello! Say what?

"Diba?" he pressed. Everyone thought it was a rhetorical question.

"Siguro." My friend answered.

"Siguro? Oo. Guwapo ako, kilangan ko yun. Di ako papayag na hindi."

"Oo," I said, "Ikaw ang pinaka-guwapo dito sa cafe, ikaw rin ang pinaka-guwapo na nakita ko buong araw. Totoo naman yun, take it for whatever that's worth."

"Thank you. So bakit wala akong makilalang katulad ko?" he asks again.

They thankfully broke the mold when they made you, I silently thought to myself while seeing everyone seemed thirsty as they started to sip their brew.

"I just need some validation from other people around me." My buddy finally finding the words to express his frustration.

Several weeks ago my buddy suddenly had become 'chatty' via SMS. I knew right there and then that something was up. After a few exchanges we finally made plans to meet up for dinner and coffee as I decided this probably won't be the typical night of geeking out on comics and action figures.

"I'm actually very happy where I am right now at this point of my life, but it seems like no one appreciates it."

You see, my buddy did something what some people might call sudden or drastic several months back. He broke up with his long time girlfriend, hooked up with another girl, moved out of his parent's house and asked his new girl to move in with him. All within a couple of weeks. The ex was devastated. Both their families were reeling from the suddenness of it all. To many, it seemed like an irrational move. The family, partially financially dependent on him, felt betrayed to what they perceived as a possible abandonment.

My buddy? He never felt more alive. He was happy and he made several realizations that he otherwise could never have, had he stayed at his parent's place or with the girl. His family, also seems to have gotten their act together. They have taken a more active role in their lives. They've been able to get better jobs or do the work that they have been meaning to do. As a whole, their lives were getting better. Problem is, there seems to be a wall now where there was none before.

"Why do you need the validation?" I ask, "You're happy, you're family seems to be getting their life back on track. What more do you need?"

"I want it to be the same way it was before. I wonder sometimes if I made the right decision. I wonder if pushing for a change in my life and therefore pushing change for the people around me was worth it." He wistfully says.

I look at him dumbfounded. I don't get it.

Here was a man, successful in his own right. Living his life, a happy life. Who I have never seen be so optimistic about his future, a bright future. Yet he questions the validity of his own decisions because besides me, no one assures him that he made the right decision.

"Dude. That's weak." I say......

On Struggling

CC's post on religion and his follow up post, McVie's post on being lonely and the "alone" follow up and listening to our "singles" podcast again (here, over here and there) made me a little introspective.

Let's get this out the way. Life and everything in it is a struggle.

Religion, beliefs, decisions, choices, relationships, monogamy, sleeping around and most everything else is not easy. Other people will say otherwise. Don't believe in their crap. It is a struggle. I am not trying to precipitate on anyone's gaily clad people dancing on the streets (*cough* rain on anyone's parade *cough*). That is not my intention, I say this so that people will be more successful in resolving their inner turmoil. I sometimes see people feeling guilty for struggling with decisions or actions that other people tell them should be easy. Don't feel bad, it's ok if it's not easy for you (and probably wasn't easy for them, they can just lie and hide it better than you).

You know what the funny thing is? Since I accepted that even if I struggle with things that people say should be easy, I have actually become more relaxed and less anxious about things. In this day and age, I think everyone can use a little less anxiety and more relaxation.

A relationship is a struggle, regardless if he is the right one or the wrong one.

Love and Religion is a struggle, regardless if you are gay or straight.
